Friday 31st January was English Day at our school. English Day is an event in which students are encouraged to use as much English as they can around the school. This can range from simple actions such as greeting each other in English or holding the afternoon homeroom in English to having longer conversations with friends in English.

One feature of English Day is that our regular morning service is held in English and either Jean or myself give a more cultural focused talk about our countries or certain events. This time I had the chance to talk and so I took the opportunity to talk about my hometown, London.

At the end of 2024, a popular website released a list of the best cities to live in and London was ranked the highest. The ranking took into account many factors such as housing, culture and education. In my presentation, I took the opportunity to introduce the part of London where I grew up and some of the not so well known places in my local area.

I also talked briefly about London’s deep routed connection to music and fashion including the importance of places such as Carnaby Street and Camden Town.

Before I finished the talk, I mentioned some of the many museums that you can visit in London. One of the best things about visiting or living in London is that almost every museum us free. You may have to queue to enter some of them but they are worth the wait as you can see some of the most amazing pieces of art in the world.

I am very grateful to have had the chance to talk about my hometown with our students. I hope that in the future they have the chance to visit many different places and that one day they too will have the chance to talk about their hometowns with many people.
