2024 English Speech Contests
This year had been another busy one for our students taking part in a number of English Speech Contests.

We started the year as always with our in-school speech contests for Junior and Senior High School. From these contests, three students from the Senior High School and one student from the Junior high school were selected to take part in the Shizuoka City and Shizuoka Central region speech contests.

After being selected, the students set about writing their own speeches by drawing on their own experiences. This year, our students wrote about a range of topics from online bullying to gender issues to their own personal stories. Once the speeches were finished, the students practiced their pronunciation and prosody in order to give the best speech possible.

This year our High School students performed exceptionally well with one student winning the fourth prize in part one and another winning the first prize in part two of the Central Shizuoka contest. At the Shizuoka Prefectural contest, the student in part two went on to win the third prize.

I was very proud of all of the students who took part in the speech contests this year. They gave up a lot of their time to give speeches that meant a lot to them. This week when I watched some in-class English presentations, I was very pleased to see how much these students had progressed and how well they spoke in English. While it is always nice to win prizes at these events, the real prize is the experience that the students gain from speaking in a second language in front of a large crowd.
