International Women’s Day and an Essay Contest
On March 8, all around the world, people celebrate International Women’s Day. After many years living in Japan, it’s been interesting for me to be at a girls’ school in Canada on this day. Just like Eiwa, this school here in Victoria believes in the importance of educating young women to be future leaders in their country. There are signs everywhere in the school promoting girls’ education and the students play key leadership roles in school life and activities. On International Women’s Day, students gathered in the gym to listen to a YouTube video about gender equity and then discussed how to create a society where everyone feels valued and included.
By the way, speaking of female excellence, I’d also like to send a belated congratulations to four of our fantastic students who were awarded prizes in a national essay contest in December. Our first-year high school students wrote a composition on the topic, ‘Life Without a Smartphone,’ and the second years wrote about ‘How we should live with AI.’ Out of thousands of submissions from high schools around Japan, four of our students were awarded prizes for their work, with one student even placing in the top 16 for her essay. Congratulations, girls, and we look forward to your continuing to push to be the best you can be in the new school year!
