カナダ留学だより 2月
昨年9月からカナダに10か月留学している高校2年生から、お便りが届きました。
We finally got snow at the beginning of this month. When I saw my house surrounded by snow, I was so impressed. School was canceled for two days in a row due to the heavy snowfall. Although the snow only lasted for just over a week, we made the most of it, playing outside with snow such as building snowmen and throwing snow balls during lunch breaks and taking a lot of photos.
2月の初めについに雪が降りました！家の周りが雪で一面覆われているのを見た時はとても感動しました！学校も大雪のため2日連続で休校になりました。雪は1週間ほどで止んでしまいましたが、昼休みにグラウンドで雪合戦や雪だるまを作って遊んだり、たくさん写真を撮ったりして楽しみまし た。

Speaking of big events in February, Valentine’s Day comes to mind. At school, we played a Valentine’s game that lasted for two days. Each student received a heart shaped sticker and put it on their own chest. On the first day, girls weren’t allowed to talk to boys. If they did, they had to give their sticker to the boy. So the boys tried to get the girls to speak and those who collected the most stickers won prizes. The second day was the opposite. I found this game really unique since something like this would never happen in a Japanese school.
2月の大きなイベントといえば、バレンタインですね！学校では2日にわたってバレンタインのゲームをしました。各生徒にハートのシールが配られ、それを胸につけて過ごしました。初日は､女子 は男子と話してはいけないというルールで、もし話してしまった場合、ハートのシールを男子に渡さな ければいけません。そのため、男子は多くのシールをゲットするために、女子からの反応を得ようとがんばっていました。2日目はその逆でした。このゲームはとてもユニークで日本の学校では見たことが なかったので面白かったです。
February was also my friend’s birthday, so we hung out and celebrated together.
We baked sweets and after that, went to a restaurant which was a lot of fun. I was happy to be part of her special day. In Japan, it is common for others to plan a celebration for you, but in Canada, it is normal to organize your own birthday party and invite friends. I felt this cultural difference is really interesting.
2月は友達の誕生日だったので、お祝いをしました。一緒にスイーツを作ってその後、少し高級なレ ストランに行きました。とても楽しかったです。私は彼女の特別な日に一緒に過ごすことができて とても嬉しかったです。日本では、友達や家族が自分のために誕生日をお祝いしてくれることが 多いですが、カナダでは本人が自分で誕生日会を企画し、友達を招待してお祝いすることが多いです。私はこの文化の違いは面白いなと感じました。

Since February has only 28 days, it felt like the month flew by. Spring break is coming up in March, and I want to make a lot of great memories with my friends and host family. Until then, I’ll keep pushing myself.
2月は28日しかなかったので、あっという間でした。3月には春休みがあるので、友達やホストファミリーとたくさん思い出を作りたいです。春休みを目標に、精一杯学校生活を頑張りたいと思いま す。
