Hi! This is Hana, from Winnipeg❄️

The temperature here in Winnipeg is still low, but the daytime became longer. In summertime in Japan, it is light until 7 pm but in Canada, it's still light until around 8 pm, even though it's still March and it's still snowing! There are also birds, squirrels, and rabbits in our garden. I feel spring differently here than I do in Japan.

カナダの気温はまだまだ低いですが、少しづつ日が長くなってきました。日本では、夏になると19時くらいまで明るいですが、カナダではまだ3月というのに(雪も降っていますが)なんと20時くらいまで明るいです。鳥やリスやうさぎもいます。日本とは違う春をここで感じています。

We went for an onsite visit with The Youth in Philanthropy members. Each student made contact with companies and we interviewed them about what are they doing and their goals. I'm impressed with the story of "Leftovers Foundation.” They will receive some unsold ingredients or foods from markets and they donate it to people who are struggling with foods. There are more than 10,000 pounds of leftovers and unsold foods at markets every day. On the other hand, more than 800 million people in the world are currently suffering from hunger. We have to be aware of this current situation and make efforts to prevent food waste.
“Leftovers Foundation” recently started a project to grow vegetables and fruits together with people in need of food. I felt it was great that there are people and companies who are working to create a country that is nice to both the environment and people, rather than putting profits first, in order to maintain supply and demand.

We also talked with other companies by Zoom that we couldn’t visit directly. I learnt that the companies are working together to make our town better and solve social problems. I think it would be great if companies not only in Canada but all over the world could work together and start moving towards solving society's problems little by little.

Youth in philanthropy の仲間と、施設訪問に行きました。生徒がそれぞれの企業とコンタクトを取り、実際に訪問して具体的な活動内容などを聞きました。 私が印象に残っているのはLeftovers foundationという企業のお話で、スーパーや市場(ドナー)から売れ残った食材などを無償で受け取り、食べ物が足りなくて困っている人に寄付するという内容でした。毎日、市場では10000ポンド(約4500kg)以上の余りや売れ残りが出ているそうです。また、それとは反対に、現在世界では約8億人もの人が飢餓で苦しんでいます。私たち一人ひとりもこの現状を把握し、食品ロスを出さない努力をしていかなければなりません。

解決に一歩進み始めている最近では、ドナーからの寄付だけでなく、Leftovresが食べ物を必要としている人たちと一緒に野菜や果物を育てる、という内容も考えているそうです。需要と供給を成り立たせるため、利益を一番に考えるのではなく、環境にも人にも優しい国を築くために働いている人々や企業がいることの素晴らしさを感じました。
日程が合わなかった企業とは、zoomを使いオンラインでお話を聞きました。企業同士が協力しあい、いろいろな社会問題の解決へ向けて動いていることを知りました。カナダだけでなく、世界中の企業が協力し合い、少しずつでも社会にある問題が解決に向けて動き始めてくれると良いと思います。

Also some professional workers came to our school and we listened to them explaining about their jobs. We heard about the jobs of pastry chefs, caregivers, and mechanics. I learnt that any job can be hard, but it can be also rewarding. It also helped me think about my future.

また、学校にパティシエや介護士、整備士などの専門職の方々が来てくださり、直接お話を聞くことができました。どんな仕事も、大変なことはありますが、やりがいのある仕事だということがわかりました。私も将来に向けて考える参考になりました。

Spring vacation is coming soon! It is little shorter than Japan but I have plans to hang out with my friends. I can't wait!

来週から春休みになります。日本と違い、少し短めですが友達と一緒に遊びに行く予定があります。今から楽しみです！
