It’s already the halfway mark of my 10-month study abroad. I recently finished the first term of classes. I had tests in English and Mathematics. I wrote an essay in English. While writing it, I noticed growth in my writing speed, vocabulary, and output compared to before studying abroad, which made me happy. In Mathematics, topics like interest rates and credit cards are a little bit difficult. However, I did all the questions.

10ヶ月の留学も半分がすぎ、残りあと5ヶ月となりました。今月の中旬に前期の授業が終わり、大きなテストがありました。私は英語と数学のテストを受けました。英語はエッセイがあり少し大変だと思いましたが、留学する前の私と比べて書くスピード、ボキャブラリー、書く量が変わっていて自分自身で成長を感じられ嬉しかったです。数学では、銀行の利子やクレジットカードについてなどが主な範囲になっていて文章題が多く少し難しかったですが、全ての問題にしっかり取り組むことができたのでよかったと思います。

At the end of January, I went to the Winter Formal, which is a high school dance party. Usually it is held during the cold winter months from December to February. Actually, Grade 12 students can go to the winter formal in my school, but I was invited by friends. Girls wears dresses and boys wears suits. We enjoyed a buffet-style meal, and sitting with eight people at each table. After that, there was music, and some students enjoyed dancing or taking pictures in a photo booth. It was a good experience because we don’t have such parties in Japan.

また、1月の終わり頃にはウィンターフォーマルに行きました。ウィンターフォーマルとは通常12月から2月の寒い冬の間に行われるハイスクールのダンスパーティーです。私が通っている学校では、本来ウィンターフォーマルは高３が参加できるパーティーですが、友達に誘ってもらい行くことができました。そこでは女の子はドレスを着て、男の子はスーツを着ています。ビュッフェ形式で好きなものをとり1テーブルにつき8人で囲むようにして食事をしました。その後、音楽が流れダンスを楽しんでいる生徒やフォトブースで記念写真を撮る生徒など様々でした。日本ではこのようなパーティーはないので大変良い経験になりました。

For the second semester, I'm taking English, ELD (English Language Development), yearbook, art, and food classes. I'm a bit anxious about keeping up with the local English class, but my friends are in the same class, so we will help each other. Moreover, new international students, including a Japanese friend, joined our school this semester. And we eat lunch and study together which is a lot of fun for me. Also, we are taking the same English class, so we can discuss class topics together. While I don't often have the chance to speak English with Japanese friends, it seems like this will change, and I'm excited about that. Despite the limited time left in this program, I would like to return home to having improved all my skills.

後期は英語、ELD（英語）、yearbook、美術、フードの授業をとっています。正直なところ、現地の英語の授業に十分ついていけるか不安もありますが、友達も同じクラスをとっているので一緒に頑張りたいと思います。また、後期から新しくインターナショナルの生徒が私たちの学校に来ました。その中には日本人の子もいて、一緒にお昼を食べたり自習をしたりすることができてとても嬉しいです。また、みんな同じ英語の授業をとっているので授業で扱ったトピックについて話し合ったりもできます。日本人の子と英語で喋る機会はあまりないのですが、これから増えていきそうで楽しみにしています。あと半分と少ない時間ではありますが多くの面で成長して帰国できるように頑張りたいと思います。
