アメリカ留学だより
7月からアメリカ、インディアナに1年留学している高2の生徒から、お便りが届きました。
It's already November and the weather is getting much colder than I expected. It snowed on Halloween; it was really surprising for me to see snow in October. It was my first time experiencing snow in the United States of America. It did not snow enough for us to make a snowman… but maybe next time!! My host mother said “Japanese snowmen are so weird.” First, my brain was super confused like, “What, why?!” But then I asked her, "Is it because there's only two balls?” Then she was like, “Yea, lol” so I’m super excited to build a snowman with three balls!! Like a “REAL” snowman.
もう11月になり予想以上に寒くなってきました。ハロウィーンの日には雪が降りました。10月に雪が降るなんて驚きました。アメリカでの雪は初めての経験でした。雪だるまを作れるほどの量の雪ではなかったのですが、次回は雪だるまを作りたいです！ホストマザーは、「日本の雪だるまは変ね 」と言ったので、最初私は、“え？なんで？"って思いました。でも、"ボールが2つしかないから？"って聞いてみたら、彼女は「そう（笑）」と言ったので、次は3つのボールで作ります！本物の雪だるまみたいに！
Now, I’m getting used to my school life. At school, I take seven classes. As an exchange student, I must take English and U.S History, because they’re required subjects. Plus that, I take Human Development & Wellness, 2D Art, Algebra II, Advanced Science Zoology, and Principles of Culture & Hospitality. At first, it was really difficult but day by day I got used to it. First, when I looked at my grades I thought the teacher mixed up my grades with someone else but she hadn’t, so I'm super impressed with myself. Especially in Zoology class, I need not only English skills but also to know the technical terminology of zoology, so that’s why it’s the hardest class, I guess. To keep my grades, I always review all my works that I have learned that day. I will try to never let my grades drop and always keep them perfect.
I also started after school activities. I’m in the dance team, photo club, and a community volunteer club called CRASH. I really enjoy all of them, especially the dance team. We perform at boys’ basketball games at half time. The first game is coming up on November 22nd so our coach told us that we’re going to start morning practices from 5:30 am. If the students’ grades are not good, we are not allowed to do any sports so I need to be really serious.
さて、学校生活にも慣れてきました。学校では7科目の授業を受けています。交換留学生として、英語とアメリカ史は必修科目なので、それに加えて人間発達と健康、2D美術、数学、アドバンスト動物学、文化とホスピタリティーの原則を取っています。最初は本当に大変でしたが、日に日に慣れていきました。最初、自分の成績を見たとき、先生が他の人の成績と間違えたのかと思いましたが、そうではなかったので、自分でも感動しています。特に動物学の授業では、英語力だけでなく、動物学の専門用語も必要になるので、私にとっては一番難しい授業です。成績を維持するために、習ったことは必ずその日のうちに復習しています。どの成績も落とさず、常にパーフェクトをキープできるように頑張ります。
放課後の部活やクラブ活動も始めました。ダンスチーム、写真クラブ、CRASHという地域ボランティアクラブに入っています。特にダンスチームはとてもハードですが最高に楽しいです。私たちは男子バスケットボールの試合でハーフタイムにパフォーマンスをします。最初の試合が11月22日にあるので、コーチから朝5時半から朝練を始めるように言われました。学校のルールで、成績がダウンすれば強制的に部活を辞めなければいけないので両立を頑張っています。

During fall break, I visited a different host family who has an exchange student from Thailand this year. It took about an hour to get from our house to their house. I stayed with them for the whole week. They took me to the movies, boba-tea shop, pumpkin patch, different types of cafes, zoo, aquarium, chocolate shop, Mexican restaurant, donuts shop, mall and so on. We also made dinner together and watched Japanese comedy on YouTube. I experienced and challenged various things in that one week; it was so much fun being with them. The Thai student and I both picked our favorite pumpkin and carved it. I slept in the same room as her -- she is super sweet!!
秋休みには、今年タイからの留学生を受け入れている別のホストファミリーを訪れました。そちらのホストファミリーの家まで約1時間かかりました。そこに一週間宿泊させていただきました。映画館、タピオカティーショップ、パンプキンパッチ、カフェ、動物園、水族館、チョコレート屋、メキシコ料理屋、ドーナツ屋、ショッピングモールなどに連れて行ってもらいました。一緒に夕食を作ったり、YouTubeで日本のお笑いを見たりもしました。この1週間でいろいろなことを経験、挑戦し、彼らと一緒に過ごすことができてとても楽しかったです。タイからの留学生とお互い好きなカボチャを1つずつ選んで彫りました。私は彼女の部屋に泊まらせてもらいました。とても優しい子です。

On October 31st, I went trick or treating with my friends after school. We actually didn’t have time to dress up because I had dance team practice after school on that day. I just felt like I was going to freeze to death. When I was in the UK, I experienced way colder weather than what it was on that day, but here, the weather changes really fast during the day, so I don’t have time to get used to it and you can’t actually answer when somebody asks how the weather is like, which everyone thinks it’s so weird. I will wear warm clothes and protect myself from the cold.
10月31日の放課後に友達とトリック・オア・トリートをしに行きました。その日は放課後にダンスチームの練習があったので、完全にドレスアップする時間はありませんでした。あまりにも寒すぎて凍え死にそうでした。イギリスに住んでいたときは、その日よりもずっと寒い気候で慣れているはずなのに、ここでは日中の天気の変化がめまぐるしく、その変化に慣れる時間がなく、天気を聞かれても答えようがありません。しかし日本より寒いのは確かなので暖かい服を着て、寒さ対策していきます。
